Ergodic Theory, free cooling and steady states of three wet granular disks — •Jan-Hendrik Trösemeier and Jürgen Vollmer — MPI for Dynamics & Self-Organization, Göttingen

We extend the Sinai billiard to a model of three granular disks with minimal capillary interactions. These dissipative interactions lead eventually to a clustered state representing a frozen arrangement of the disks. To study the system in a steady state energy is injected by applying shearing via Lees-Edwards boundary conditions. This model system allows us to explore how the frozen state, which acts as an absorbing state in phase space, influences the dynamics of phase-space structure, invariant measures, and attractors. Surprisingly, the life-time distribution till a given initial condition reaches the frozen state shows an algebraic distribution, with a possibility that a finite number of initial conditions remain unbounded forever.
