Measurement of the 238U(n,n’) cross section between 1.5 and 4 MeV — •C. Goddio, A.J.M. Plompen, and E. Wattecamps — JRC-Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM), Retieseweg, B-2440 Geel, Belgium

Experiments are ongoing to determine the 238U(n,n’) cross section for incoming neutron energies from 1 to 4 MeV and excitation energies between 0.5 and 1.5 MeV. Neutrons are produced by the T(p,n)3He reaction at the 7 MV Van de Graaff accelerator. The neutron detectors are NE213 liquid scintillators placed at angles of 55, 90 and 125. Neutron time of flight and pulse height spectra are recorded. Pulse shape analysis is applied. The normalization of the data is done relative to the elastic scattering cross section of natC for energies less than 2 MeV and to the well known n-p cross section at higher energies. Preliminary quantitative results will be presented and compared with current evaluated data files.
