The transition of nucleons into partons in ultrarelativistic nuclear collissions — •Mark W. Beinker1,2 and Berndt Müller21Technische Universität Dresden, Institut für Theoretische Physik, D-01062 Dresden — 2Duke University, Department of Physics, Box 90305, Durham, N.C. 27708-0305, USA

It is beleived that collisions of heavy nuclei at energies of some hundreds GeV and above will produce a deconfined phase with quarks and gluons propagating freely. In this energy region, perturbative QCD becomes available, which led to the developement of parton cascade models.

Recent parton cascade models resolves the nucleons into their substituting partons from the beginning of the collision. However, it is still not clear how the phase transition of the nuclei consisting of nucleons into a quark-gluon gas takes place.

To answer this question, the Boltzmann-equation in a 1+1 dimensional model is solved with a liquid of nucleons in the initial state and additional liquids for quarks and gluons in the final state.
