Macromolecular Cholesteric Order Observed — •Y. Huang1, J. Loos2, Y. Q. Yang1, and Jürgen Petermann21Guangzhou Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences — 2FB Chemical Engineering, University of Dortmund, Emil-Figge-Str.66, 44221 Dortmund, Germany

Cellulose and most of its derivatives can form lyotropic cholesteric liquid crystals in the appropriate solvent systems. Ethyl-cyanoethyl cellulose [(E-CE)C] can be dissolved in acrylic acid (AA) very well and form cholesteric liquid crystalline solutions when the concentration is above the critical value. The cholesteric order in the solution can be frozen in the system by polymerizing the solvent - AA quickly and the (E-CE)C/PAA composites with perfect cholesteric order can be prepared. The macromolecular cholesteric order in (E-CE)C/AA liquid crystalline solutions is revealed by directly observing the morphology and structure of the (E-CE)C/PAA composites with electron microscopy. A lamellar structure and some sub-structures within the lamellae are observed in the macromolecular cholesteric order. The orientation of polymer chains in the cholesteric phase and the appearance of the sub-structures observed by TEM are discussed.
