Dewetting at polymer/polymer interfaces — •Kevin C. Phelan and Georg Krausch — Inst. f. Phys. Chemie, LMU München, Theresienstr. 39, 80333 München

We study the dynamics of thin film liquid-liquid dewetting in polymeric bilayers using optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Optical measurements are carried out in situ to obtain estimates of dewetting speeds, and AFM studies are used to supplement and explain the measured effects by examining the solidified polymer-polymer interface. To date, studies have included observations of dewetting speeds and their dependancies on molecular weights (viscosities), temperature, film thicknesses and substrate type. Some of the observed effects support parts of the general classical liquid-liquid theories but several effects (such as substrate proximity) have been noted that have not been previously taken into account in the description of the system. These effects have also been observed in ellipsometry work in thin films of PS and PMMA (Keddy, 1994). In addition to experiments in the early stage of dewetting, we also investigate the late stage static equilibrium, where droplet of PS are formed on the PMMA base layer.
