Measurement of the Σ and π charge radii in the WA89 experiment at CERN [1] — •F. Dropmann — Max-Planck Institut f"ur Kernphysik, Saupfercheckweg 1, 69117 Heidelberg

In order to determine the π– and Σ–charge radii the differential cross section dσ/dQ2 for π– and Σ– electron scattering at small four-momentum transfers Q2 were measured. Σ and π scattering events were identified and characterized by means of a maximum likelihood method. Comparing the extracted <r2>(π) with existing data on the pion radius we can crosscheck this procedure. Applying this method to Σ – electron scattering, for the first time the influence of a strange quark on the charge radius of a baryon can be explored.
