The measurements at ANKE aim to study the effects of the nuclear medium on elementary processes. For this purpose experiments using the polarized stored proton beam of the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) and unpolarized targets will be carried out as well as studies utilizing a polarized hydrogen and deuterium gas target. Among the first studies the deuteron breakup in pd scattering with polarized beam and vector or tensor polarized target will be carried out.The polarized internal gas target will be installed between spectrometer magnets D1 and D2. The nuclear polarization is generated in a standard Stern-Gerlach Atomic Beam Source that will allow to produce vector polarized hydrogen and vector or tensor polarized deuterium. The target will consist of a long narrow tube into which the polarized atoms from the Atomic Beam Source are injected. In order to minimize depolarization during a few hundred collisions of the atoms with the cell walls a special wall material such as teflon, drifilm or fomblin must be used for coating. It is anticipated to increase the target thickness by cooling of the cell to temperatures of about T=100 K. The vertical stray field of the spectrometer magnet D2 will be used as a guide field for the polarized deuterium atoms in the storage cell. The status of the design and construction of the Atomic Beam Source will be reviewed together with the polarized experimental program of ANKE in the near future.
