Higher harmonic generation in a quantum wire with impurity — •Andrea Fechner1, Maura Sassetti2, and Bernhard Kramer11I. Institut für Theoretische Physik, Universität Hamburg, Jungiusstraße 9, D-20355 Hamburg — 2Istituto di Fisica di Ingegneria, INFM, Via Dodecaneso 33, I-16146 Genova

We study theoretically the space- and time-dependent non-linear current response to a monochromatic voltage across a tunnel barrier in a one-dimensional system of interacting electrons. Due to the presence of the barrier and the electron-electron interaction the current-voltage characteristic is non-linear and thus higher harmonics can be generated. Using the Luttinger approximation we analyse the second harmonic in detail as a function of driving field, frequency, interaction strength and temperature. We evaluate quantitatively the emitted power and estimate its magnitude for a realistic quantum wire.
