Research in global climate change and modern air hygiene led to an increased interest in online chemical analysis of harmful ultrafine aerosols (dp < 1µ m). Especially heavy metal and soot aerosols are known for their toxicological effects. Due to the small mass involved with ultrafine aerosol analysis, the determination of the elemental composition is currently most often achieved by filter sampling, followed by time-consuming chemical digestion, and a subsequent analysis. These techniques don’t allow on-line and in situ measurements yielding increased turn-around times for appropriate measurements. In the presentation two possible solutions will be shown: Laser-induced emission and photoacoustic spectroscopy.
