Electric-field gradient of 111Cd impurity in Tb2O3 and Tl2O3 measured with perturbed angular correlation spectroscopy. — •R. Vianden, R.N. Saxena, and M. Forker — Institut für Strahlen- und Kernphysik, Universität Bonn, Nußallee 14–16, 53119 Bonn

The time-differential perturbed-angular-correlation (PAC) method has been used to study the quadrupole interaction of 111Cd nuclei dilutely substituting the cation sites in the sesquioxides Tb2O3 and Tl2O3. The measurements were carried out at several temperatures between 290K and 1000K.The observed quadrupole interactions were attributed to the electric-field gradients (efg) acting on 111Cd at the substitutional lattice sites in the cubic bixbyte phase. Two non-equivalent cation sites with different octahedral oxygen configurations expected for a bixbyte structure could be identified in both oxides. The experimentally determined efg’s are compared with the calculated values using the point charge model (PCM) and also discussed in terms of a previously observed correlation between the efg and cation-oxygen bond length in binary and ternary metal oxides.
