We present the application of the R-matrix formalism to the calculation of the self-consistent potential in current carrying quantum structures. It is shown that the Wigner-Eisenbud functions used in the R-matrix formalism are suitable functions to describe the transport problem: First, they constitute an orthonormal function system in which the expansion of the electron density converges rapidly, so that for a good description only very few basis functions are necessary. Second, they provide a natural representation of the quasibound states which may form in either the emitter contact or in the center of the tunneling structure as resonant state.
