We investigate the interaction between surface acoustic waves (SAW) and the excitonic photoluminescence (PL) in GaAs-based quantum well structures. The SAW’s were generated electrically by interdigital transducers fabricated on the sample surface. The PL depends strongly on the SAW amplitude. This effect is due to the field-induced quenching of the excitons by the piezoelectric field[1]. In the presence of a standing SAW, the PL intensity becomes spatially modulated with a periodicity equal to half of the acoustic wavelength (λSAW)[2]. This lateral modulation of the PL was detected by spatially resolved measurements with a lateral resolution of about 1 µm. We attribute the modulation to the lateral separation of electron-hole pairs by the standing piezo-electric field at times when the standing wave field is large, followed by their preferential recombination close to the standing wave nodes, when the standing wave field vanishes. the acoustic waves and
