We present results of measurements on a plasma created by a discharge in a sulphur capillary and irradiated by a picosecond laser pulse with the energy lower than 1 J. This arrangment represents a novel hybrid pumping scheme for table-top X-ray lasers, based on a combination of capillary discharge with laser driven transient inversion. Temporally resolved transmission measurement, the laser beam shape monitoring, laser pulse guiding and the XUV spectra are discussed. The spectra show unambiguously that the short laser pulse influences the plasma emission and strong amplification on the 3p-3s transition in Ne-like sulphur is observed. This observation, combined with the fact that the emission shows lower divergence and significant gain-length product, suggests that strong lasing is occuring. This is, to our knowledge, the first demonstration of the laser action in such a pumping arrangement.
