Time resolved energy loss spectrometry of heavy ions generating a dense plasma — •D. Varentsov1, P. Spiller2, U. Neuner2, and D.H.H. Hoffmann1,21Technische Universität Darmstadt — 2Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt

The heavy ion synchrotron (SIS) at the GSI Darmstadt provides intense beams of heavy ions up to uranium accelerated to energies of the order of 300 MeV/u. Using this facility the experiments with heavy ion beam generated dense plasmas from solid targets are being performed at the GSI Plasma Physics group experimental area HHT. By the use of a dispersive magnetic spectrometer tog ether with a fast streak camera it is possible to measure time resolved energy loss and charge state distribution spectra of th e heavy ion beam during the whole time of generation of the plasma. Such measurements will provide quantitative information for understanding of the interaction phenomena between fast heavy ions and dense plasma as well as the information about the energ y deposition processes of heavy ions in solids and plasmas. The spectrometer has to provide a large energy acceptance for heavy ion beams with relatively high magnetic rigidity. Because o f the limited spatial extension of the experimental area the spectrometer should be also quite compact. This work is devoted to the development of a magnetic spectrometer for plasma physics experiments at HHT. Different approaches, including conventional steel-dominated magnets and a fast high-current pulsed magnets have been considered.
