By end of the year 2001, the heavy ion synchrotron (SIS) at thr GSI Darmstadt will accelerate uranim ions to energies of about 200 MeV/u. The total number of particles in the beam is expected to be 2 × 1011 and the pulse length will be about 50 ns. These beam parameters will lead to a specific power deposition of 1-2 TW/g in solid matter.Using a two-dimensional computer code Big-2, we have simulated the hydrodynamic response of solid cylindrical targets that are irradiated by the above beam. We have considered different type of target geometries including solid lead cylinders as well as hollow cylinders. For the beam we also consider two different configurations, namely a normal beam with a circular spot as well as a hollow beam with a ring shaped spot. Our calculations show that one can achieve up to four times solid lead density and pressures of above 20 Mbar by using suitable beam-target geometries. Our calculations also indicate that one may achieve conditions necessary for hydrogen metallization by imploding a suitably designed multi-layered target that contains a layer of frozen hydrogen.
