Group averaging as method for constrained quantization — •Domenico Giulini — Institut für Theoretische Physik, Universität Zürich, Winterthurerstrasse 190, CH-8057 Zürich, Schweiz

The so-called ‘Dirac approach’ to quantization in the presence of constraints is well known to have many ambiguities. A more concrete sheme for the implementation of Dirac’s ideas goes under the name of ‘refined algebraic quantization’, which I will briefly review. I will present a set of natural conditions under which this latter sheme can be fixed uniquely. It can then also be shown that the reduction procedure can always be implemented by ‘group averaging’, if the gauge group is a finite dimensional but otherwise unrestricted Lie group.
