Kaon-pion separation at ANKE with differential Cherenkov detectors — •R. Esser, M. Hennebach, and H.R. Koch — FZ Jülich, IKP

The magnetic spectrometer ANKE, installed at an internal target place in COSY, is extended by a detection system for negatively charged ejectiles. The planned measurement of the production of K+ and K mesons in nuclear targets below the NN threshold requires the suppression of an intense pionic background. For particle momenta from 600 to 1000 MeV/c time of flight and ΔE information alone are not sufficient. Simulation calculations show, that specially shaped lucite Cherenkov detectors yield excellent particle separation for all trajectories originating from the target. The detector elements are curved, focusing on a virtual target point, which is situated in the central region of the magnet gap. The momentum and angular distributions of the reaction products are taken into account. Design and expected performance of the detectors are presented.
