The Matrix Model of M Theory — •Jan Plefka — Max-Planck-Institut für Gravitationsphysik, Albert-Einstein-Institut, 14476 Golm

It is currently believed that the five known superstring theories should be regarded as appropriate limits of a more fundamental eleven dimensional theory, referred to as M theory. It has been proposed that its quantum degrees of freedom are captured by a maximally supersymmetric quantum mechanical U(N) Yang-Mills model, known as Matrix theory. We review the status of this proposal, putting particular emphasis on the computation of scattering amplitudes and supersymmetry constraints on the effective action.
