Black Hole Entropy and String Theory — •Thomas Mohaupt — Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, Fachbereich Physik, Fachgruppe Theoretische Physik, D-06099 Halle, Germany

During the last years string theory has opened up a new perspective on black hole physics. In particular an interpretation of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in terms of a dual ’D-brane’ or ’M-brane’ description of black holes has been proposed. We review the computation of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for extremal black holes in four-dimensional string compactifications with N ≥ 2 supersymmetry and its successful comparison to the counting of states in the D-brane / M-brane picture.
