Construction of a LIDAR for Atmospheric Studies to Complement the 17m ø MAGIC Cherenkov Telescope — •Manuel Pavon, Eckart Lorentz, Razmic Mirzoyan, and Juan Cortina — Max-Planck-Institut für Physik,Werner-Heisenberg-Institut,Föhringer Ring 6,80805 München

The very large atmospheric imaging Cherenkov telescope MAGIC, currently under construction will allow us to measure with very high sensitivity cosmic gamma rays from sources down to energies of a few tens of GeV and thus to close the existing 10-200 GeV gap in the electromagnetic spectrum. We report here about the design and the first tests of a LIDAR telescope which will be located close to MAGIC and will be used to measure, simultaneously with the latter, the light transmission features of the atmosphere such as, for example, the aerosol scattering and the presence of clouds. These data will help us to correct the estimated energy of primaries and thus to improve the precision of measurements.
