Monatomic Co wires can be grown by step-edge decoration of a vicinal Pt surface. The Co wires form a regular array on the Pt substrate, with a high degree of longitudinal coherence and an even lateral spacing. The magnetism of the monatomic wires was investigated over a wide range of temperature (10-300 K) and applied magnetic field (0-7 T) by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the ESRF. The ensemble of 1-D monatomic Co wires on Pt presents a magnetic behaviour well distinct from that of 2-D Co films and 3-D systems. The monatomic wires display a superparamagnetic behaviour over a wide temperature range, low susceptibility, but large magnetization at high field. The 1-D-character of the monatomic Co wires manifests itself in a strongly anisotropic and nearly uniaxial superparamagnetic response to the external magnetic field.
