The magnetic structure of epitaxial fcc-Fe(100) films of 2-10 atomic layer thickness, sandwiched between fcc-Co, has been investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation. By combining selective nuclear excitation with linearly-polarized radiation this method offers site sensitivity and is able to disclose complex magnetic film structures. Layer-resolved measurements on a 7 atomic layer Fe film reveal a non-collinear magnetic structure where the orientation of the moments changes layer by layer. The Fe hyperfine field vector is found to be parallel to the Co magnetization near the interfaces and almost perpendicular to it in the film center. Frustrated antiferromagnetic interactions are proposed as the microscopic cause for the non-collinear magnetism of this layered system.
