The Beauty of CP Violation — •Klaus R. Schubert — Dresden
CP violation is strange and beautiful. Discovered 1964 in decays of strange mesons, it has later found a possible explanation in the Higgs mechanism of the Standard Model. With three elementary fermion families, Higgs induced fermion mixing is different for quarks and antiquarks. This explanation can be tested quantitatively with decays of “beautyful” mesons. Production rates of these mesons have already been sufficient for testing the quark mixing origin of CP violation. For directly observing the predicted CP asymmetries in beauty decays, production rates have only reached the necessary level with the 1999 startup of the two B-meson factories KEK-B at Tsukuba/Japan and PEP-II at Stanford/USA. Performances of the two will be presented together with first results form the two experiments BABAR at PEP-II and BELLE at KEK-B.
