Ambient energy is the energy that goes inside the jets in hadron collisions but that is not due to particles coming from the hard scattering. This energy, which is mainly due to soft scattering processes, cannot be perturbatively calculated and must be subtracted in the inclusive jet cross section analysis in order to compare the data with NLO QCD calculations. To determine this contribution we studied a semi quiet region of an event far away from the high jets but still in the central rapidity region. We compare the Herwig prediction of the low transverse momentum distribution of charged particles in this region to CDF data. Besides the data taking at √s=1800 GeV, CDF collected about 600 nb−1 at √s=630 GeV during December 1995. The data at both center-of-mass energies were analyzed and compared with the Herwig simulation passed through the fast CDF detector simulation program QFL. The comparison at two different center-of-mass energies allows for an extrapolation to the LHC energy regime of 14 TeV.
