Magnetic and Structural Properties of Ion Beam Deposited Co-CoO Thin Films — •Hamid R. Khan1 and Alexander Granovsky21FEM, Materials Physics Department, Katharinenstrasse 17, 73525 Schwaebisch Gmuend — 2Faculty of Physics, Moscow State University, 119899 Moscow, Russia

A series of nanocrystalline Co-CoxOy films of thickness (640-750 nm) were deposited on glasss substrates by ion beam deposition technique using argon-oxygen gas mixtures plasma and a Co target. Films were annealed at 550 deg.cent./1h in vacuum. Films consist of nano crystalline Co and CoxOy with hcp/ fcc phases and the crystallite size grows to ( 40-60 ) nm after annealing. Films show easy axis of magnetization in the plane of the films. The coercivity Hc and the saturation magnetisation Ms depend on the composition, microstructure and structure of the film. A positive GMR effect(1) is observed, which is most probably due to the interaction of FM (Co) and AFM (CoO) crystallites. Relatonship among the structural, magnetic, microstructural, and magnetoresistive properties of the films will be discussed. 1.H.R. Khan, A. Granovsky, M. Prudnikova, V. Prudnikova, F. Brouers, A.
