Reflectance Anisotropy Spectroscopy (RAS), which measures the difference in reflectivity for linearly polarized light along two orthogonal directions in the surface plane[1], has been applied to study the molecular adsorption on Cu(110). For the clean surface, the spectral RAS features exhibit a prominent structure located around 2.1 eV which is attributed to surface and bulk-related transitions. The adsorption of different gas species leads to substantial and characteristic changes in the RA-spectra. Whereas weakly boud molecules, like physisorbed molecular nitrogen and xenon, appear to remove only the surface-related feature, the CO quenches both surface state and bulk state peaks. Especially, in the case of CO on Cu(110), the RAS signal is extremely sensitive, allowing the detection of CO coverages lower than 0.001ML. This high sensitivity can be used to study the kinetics of adsorbates on the Cu(110) surface.
