The changes in the surface optical anisotropy of Cu(110) and Cu(110)-(2×1)O induced by Co deposition have been studied by Reflectance Anisotropy Spectroscopy (RAS). The RAS measures the difference of the complex reflectance along two perpendicular axes in the surface. During the initial stages of Co deposition (coverage of 0.1 ML) on both, the clean and oxygen covered Cu surface, the characteristic surface state transitions are quenched. At these low coverages the bulk-related features in the spectra remain nearly unchanged. Further Co deposition modifies the bulk-related peaks substantially and new Co related features appear. Simultaneously, the sample is characterized by complimentary surface science techniques (He-scattering, STM and AES). This allows to assign changes in the RA-spectra to structure, morphology and composition of the surface.
