Circular Dichroism in Photoemission from Xe and Kr on Pt(111) — •Gerhard Fecher, Andreas Oelsner, and Gerd Schönhense — Johannes Gutenberg - Universität, Institut für Physik, D-55099 Mainz, Germany

The adsorption of Xe and Kr monolayers on Pt(111) was studied by means of Circular Dichroism in the Angular Distribution of photoelectrons (CDAD). The experiments have been carried out at the 6.5mNIM monochromator of BESSY I in Berlin providing circularly polarised light in the VUV-range (5..20eV). The Pt(111) single crystal was mounted on a liquid-Helium cooled cryostat suitable for temperatures below 20K. The coverage was determined by LEED, UPS, and work function measurements. The spin-orbit splitting of the p valence states was resolved as well as the splitting of the j=3/2 state into its m=1/2, 3/2 substates. CDAD was observed for all electronic substates with asymmetries up to about 50 angle, photon energy and coverage. An additional attend was put on the photoemission near threshold. The results will be discussed on hand of a relativistic LCAO band structure model and spin dependent photoelectron diffraction. The detailed discussion of the observed CDAD shows that the description of the adsorption mechanism has to include adsorbate-substrate as well as adsorbate-adsorbate interactions.
