Decoherence in Classically Chaotic Systems: A Semiclassical Approach — •Rodolfo A. Jalabert — Université Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France

Semiclassical methods have been extensively used in a variety of physical problems, ranging from nuclear to cluster physics, and from ballistic transport to interaction effects in nanostructures. The recent interest in the old problem of decoherence, fostered by the perspectives of quantum computing as well as new Gedanken-like experiments, yielded another field of application of the semiclassical approach. When a one-particle system whose classical analogue is chaotic evolves coupled to a weakly quenched environment, it can be shown that the decoherence rate is asymptotically given by its mean Lyapunov exponent. This independence of the perturbation strength, within a given range, is consistent with numerical simulations and recent experiments on spin echo in nuclear magnetic resonance.
