Properties of new one-dimensional transition metal oxides — •Frédéric Mila — Institut de Physique Théorique, Université de Lausanne (Switzerland)

In this talk, I will review the current theoretical understanding of a number of quasi-one dimensional transition metal oxides with remarkable properties which have been recently synthetized. The emphasis will be put on three systems, with very different properties:

1) LiVGe2O6, a spin 1 system which orders at relatively high temperature despite very well separated chains, and for which the presence of a biquadratic interaction has been proposed.

2) VOSb2O4, the first inorganic spin 1/2 chain which exhibits a pseudo-gap behaviour before undergoing what is presumably a spin-Peierls transition.

3) Cu2Te2O5X2 (X=cl,Br), a quasi-one dimensional arrangement of Cu2+ tetrahedra which is expected to have low-lying singlet excitations inside a large singlet-triplet gap.
