Structural and superconducting properties of epitaxial a-axis and c-axis oriented YNi2B2C thin films — •Stuart C. Wimbush, Kerstin Häse, Ludwig Schultz, and Bernhard Holzapfel — IFW Dresden, Helmholtzstr. 20, 01171 Dresden.

Results are presented of the pulsed laser deposition of YNi2B2C thin films, and the analysis of their structural and superconducting properties. Under a particular set of deposition conditions, it is demonstrated that epitaxial films (FWHM better than 5) possessing either an a-axis or c-axis orientation perpendicular to the MgO substrate can be obtained. The a-axis oriented films are found to reveal a lower intrinsic TC due to the higher defect density caused by the required deposition parameters. This is overcome, however, by a subsequent heat treatment which leaves the orientation unchanged, but brings the final TC of all the films to above 14K. Measurements of the upper critical field of the films reveal an interesting set of anisotropies, contradictory to those reported for bulk single crystals. The current stage of investigation of these anisotropies is presented.
