Magnetism and superconductivity in the layered ruthenates — •Andrew Mackenzie — School of Physics and Astronomy, University of St. Andrews, North Haugh, St. Andrews, Fife KY16 9SS, Scotland

A review will be given of the metallic, magnetic and superconducting properties of the layered perovskite ruthenates. As the dimensionality of the compounds in the series changes from two to three, so do their low temperature properties. Itinerant ferromagnetism, itinerant metamagnetism and unconventional superconductivity are all observed. Experimental evidence that the superconductivity involves spin triplet pairing will also be discussed.
