Impact of the LHC Project on the SPS Vacuum System: Pressure behaviour with LHC Type Beams — •K. Weiss, J. Arnold, F. Billard, B. Henrist, J.M. Jimenez, G. Mathis, and G. Versolatto — CERN/LHC Division, SL Section, Genf

The 400 GeV synchrotron SPS will be used in the future as the injector to the LHC machine. Several changes to the vacuum equipment must be made to adapt this machine to its future tasks and performance. The implications of these necessary modifications will be reviewed from a vacuum point of view. Significant pressure increases were recorded during the circulation of the first LHC test beams with bunch intensities up to 8.1010 protons/bunch. The origin of these increases will be discussed as well as the possible remedies and, in particular, the effect of beam scrubbing.
