Relativistic Electron Transport in Preformed Overdense Plasma — •Malte Kaluza, M.I.K. Santala, H. Habara, G.D. Tsakiris, and K.J. Witte — Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik, D-85748 Garching bei München

One of the central issues in the concept of fast ignition is the energy transport over a distance of a few 100 um of overdense plasma via fast electrons in the MeV energy range. The electron propagation in this environment is expected to be dominated by collective effects due to fields and currents induced by the electron beam itself. In an ongoing experiment, the electron production occurs in a long scale length plasma produced by a Nd:glass laser delivering 15J in 3ns at 2w. Using thin plastic foils as targets, 1D hydrodynamic simulations show the creation of a long underdense plasma with scale lengths of a few 100 um and a region of overdense plasma several 10 um thick. The relativistic electrons are produced by self-focusing of a synchronized 1J/150fs Ti:sapphire laser pulse in the underdense corona. Preliminary results using sideview imaging show clearly the generation of a channel in the underdense plasma and the existence of electrons with energies up to 30 MeV penetrating through the target. A detailed characterization of the electron spectrum under different experimental conditions using an electron spectrometer is under way.
