INTER-WELL TRANSPORT of ATOMS in OPTICAL LATTICES — •Wolfgang Merkel, Matthias Freyberger, Holger Mack, Wolfgang Schleich, and Viktor Kozlov — Abteilung fuer Quantenphysik, Universitaet Ulm, D-89069 Ulm, Germany

We propose a method for transporting an atom between two neighboring potential wells of an optical lattice. By applying a bi-chromatic optical field in a Raman-type configuration, the atom experiences first an acceleration by one of the fields and then a de-acceleration by the other, appearing finally in the new desirable position. The efficiency of the transfer can ideally approach 100%. We develop a simplified analytical 3-level model and provide also a numerical test of the performance of the method by taking into account the real vibrational structure of the lattice. The requirements on the optical fields are shown to be compatible with the currently available experimental technology.
