Co-evolving strategies for the Prisoner’s dilemma in space — •Holger Ebel and Stefan Bornholdt — Institut für Theoretische Physik, Universität Kiel, Leibnitzstr. 15, D-24098 Kiel

We study the iterated Prisoner’s dilemma game in a given spatial structure where players interact only with their next neighbors. The players attempt to improve their payoffs by mutating their strategies which imposes an evolutionary dynamics on the game. The stationary states of this spatially extended co-evolutionary game correspond to the Nash equilibria of classical game theory. Perturbations of the equilibria lead to avalanches, i.e. series of mutations necessary to reestablish a stationary state. Depending on the extension of the strategy space, the avalanche size is exponentially or power-law distributed. Additionally, switching from one Nash equilibrium to another can occur as result of a perturbation. The dependence of the system’s behavior on changes of the payoff matrix and the connection of the equilibria to the evolutionary stable states (ESS) of evolutionary game theory are discussed.
