ELLIPSOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF HOLOGRAPHIC RESPONSE IN PHOTOREFRACTIVE POLYMERS — •Francisco Gallego, Erwin Mecher, and Klaus Meerholz — Chemistry Department, Butenandstr. 11, 81377 Muenchen

A simple ellipsometric technique is traditionally used for investigating the non-linear optical effects in poled polymer matrices. Upon writing a hologram in a low glass-transition-temperature photorefractive (PR) polymer composite, the chromophores are oriented in situ by the formed space-charge field. This way the reorientation of the chromophores gives us information on the induced refractive-index modulation. We propose the application of transmission ellipsometry on the study of the PR grating and we show how it can reproduce the results of the standard four-wave-mixing (FWM) technique. This new method is simple, easy-adjustable, and non-erasing, i.e. ideally suited to complement traditional holographic methods.
