A rheometer for the investigation of the microstructure of ferrofluids — •Loredana Pop, Jens Hilljegerdes und Stefan Odenbach — ZARM, Universität Bremen, Am Fallturm, 28359 Bremen

One of the most challenging properties of ferrofluids is the possibility to change their physical properties by magnetic fields. Experimental studies of field induced changes of viscosity under shear flow as well as theoretical studies lead to the conclusion that the microscopic investigation of structure formation in ferrofluids is absolutely necessary. For the investigation of the microstructure we designed a new rheometer which can be used for experiments in a small angle neutron scattering set-up to enable the determination of particle size distribution as well as chain and aggregate formation for fluids in shear flows. The rheometer is designed in a way that it is suitable for determination of viscosity changes even for high values of magnetic field avoiding the errors due to normal field instability. Therefore we can investigate the microstructure and macroscopic changes of the behavior of ferrofluids using the same parameters. In the present poster we will present the experimental set-up and the first results obtained with the test equipment.
