Decagonal phase region in Al-Ni-Co — •Benjamin Grushko — IFF, Forschungszentrum Juelich, D-52425 Juelich

A great number of structures associated with the Al-Ni-Co decagonal phase (D-phase) were reported in the literature. They were observed in a wide compositional range under different conditions of thermal history. Apart from the No-dqtrueNo-dq decagonal structures also related macroscopically periodic pseudodecagonal structures and nanodomain states were reported. These structures were observed in solidified and thermally annealed samples at compositions between about Al72Co23Ni5 and Al70Co5Ni25. The complexity of the phase diagram in the Co-rich part of the D-range is associated with experimental complications following from the peculiarities of transformation kinetics. Our analysis of recent results leads to the significant simplification of the Al-Ni-Co D-phase range.
