Preparation and characterization of Al-Ni-M ternary alloys (M = Ru, Ir) — •Valery Shklover1, Ivan Vjunitsky1, Maxim Konter2, and Walter Steurer11Laboratory of Crystallography, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH-Zentrum. CH-8092 Zuerich — 2ALSTOM Switzerland, CH-5401 Baden

The new technology needs materials, which are able to withstand high temperature and oxidation/corrosion environment reasonable time without degradation. Intermetallic compounds based on the platinum group metals (PGMs) have very high melting temperatures, many possess outstanding mechanical and oxidation stability, what makes them good candidates for high-temperature applications, but not as bulk components (due to their cost). The ternary alloys in the system AlxNiyMz (M = Ru, Ir) with x > 50 are synthesized and characterized with DTA, BS SEM, EDX and X-ray diffraction methods. Important physico-chemical properties of alloys, e.g. dependence of phase composition on the annealing conditions, oxidation stability are studied. The phases, observed earlier were identified, the presence of decagonal phase in the system Al-Ni-Ru is confirmed.
