Structural changes of metals (Cu and Bi) in mixtures with organic media (high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polybenzimidazole (PBI)) during mechanicdal milling are discussed. The influence of the medium on the size and morphology of metal particles was examined by means of transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. In all cases, metallic nanoparticles formed along with larger structures during milling at room temperature. Significant agglomeration of Cu occurred in the mixture of Cu-HDPE. A bimodal morphology (needle and globular shape) was observed in the Bi-PBI and Cu-PBI mixtures. Differences can be attributed to mechanical properties of the organic media. PBI is a brittle rigid-rod-type polymer, in contrast to the thermoplastic HDPE.
