A Novel X-Ray Magneto-Optical Spectroscopy: The X-Ray
Voigt Effect
— •Peter M. Oppeneer1, Hans-Christoph Mertins2, Jan Kunes1, Andreas Gaupp2, Dirk Abramsohn2, Franz Schäfers2, and Wolfgang Gudat21IFW-Dresden — 2BESSY, Berlin

We report the discovery of a new X-ray magneto-optical effect, the X-ray Voigt effect. By means of polarization state analysis we have measured the X-ray Voigt rotation and ellipticity at the L3-edge of an amorphous Co film. It is explicitly shown that the X-ray Voigt effect is sensitive to the expectation value ⟨ M2 ⟩, therefore X-ray Voigt spectroscopy offers prospects of studying element-selectively the local magnetization in antiferromagnets. On the basis of ab initio calculations we show that the X-ray Voigt effect directly relates to the amount of spin polarization of the 2p core states. It provides thus a unique measure of the spin splitting of the core states.
