Beam cutting techniques, such as water jet or Laser jet cutting have many industrial applications already today. The precision of the cutting process, however, is limited by ripple formation at the cutting edge of the workpiece. To avoid these structures sub-optimal cutting velocities are used at present. Despite much work in modeling such cutting processes over the last decades, no real understanding of the origin of the striation patterns was attained. We present a new approach using concepts from nonlinear dynamics to model and control the formation of ripples. It is based on a phenomenological description by a nonlinear partial differential equation of Kuramoto-Sivashinski type, which was developed by us recently [1].
