The surface of polystyrene (PS) films decorated with gold nanoclusters was investigated by x-ray scattering measurements for temperatures around the glass transition. Reflectivity as well as grazing incidence small angle scattering (GISAXS) data were taken for polystyrene samples of different molecular weight Mw and different cluster sizes at HASYLAB, DESY, and at the ESRF.

Vacuum deposition of gold on polymer surfaces was used to form a layer of clusters with radii ranging from one to a few nanometers. In the experiments these samples were heated up to temperatures well above the glass transition temperature Tg. Driven by the lowering of the surface energy an embedding process occurs at a sufficiently low viscosity associated with Tg. Hence the clusters were used as a probe to monitor the onset of the glass transition of the polymer in the surface region.

The combined analysis of reflectivity and GISAXS measurements yields a consistent view of the temperature dependent morphology of the interfaces and the arrangement of the clusters.
