Recent studies of networks of pulse-coupled oscillators suggest that oscillators often form synchronized groups, called clusters [1-4]. However, transients towards such cluster state attractors, if sufficiently long, shield the occurence of synchronous dynamics on relevant time scales.

We study networks of pulse-coupled oscillators [3] with delayed, excitatory interactions [4]. The connectivity is weakly diluted with a normalization of the total input to each oscillator that guarantees the existence of a synchronous state. We find that long chaotic transients are abundant in these systems. We analyze these transients and investigate how the chaotic behaviour can be characterized in terms of a single driven oscillator.
