Electron holography offers a powerful tool for the analysis of the electron wave transmitted through an object representing electric and magnetic fields. In the case of ferroelectrics, a phase distribution is expected only from the in-plane component of the polarisation; theoretically, it shows an atomically fine structure on the scale of the unit cell, and a macroscopic phase distribution over extended domains. For the evaluation of a phase image in terms of direction and magnitude of the local polarisation, the gradient of the phase distribution has to be analysed in detail. Starting with the analysis of the macroscopic phase contribution, we found a series of phenomena supporting our basic assumptions about the electron phase shift due to ferroelectric polarisation.
