We report results on the optical properties of a TaB2 single crystal. This compound represents an interesting nonsuperconducting (TC<2K) reference system to the medium-TC superconductor MgB2. We compare experimental and theoretical results for the optical conductivity and find reasonable agreement. The different role of the anisotropic electronic structure in both compounds is discussed.
