TT: Tiefe Temperaturen

TT 18: Anwendungen der Supraleitung, Tieftemperatur-Teilchendetektoren

TT 18.1: Invited Talk

Thursday, March 14, 2002, 09:30–10:00, H18

Transition Edge Sensors for Imaging Spectrometers — •Henk Hoevers — Space Research Organization Netherlands, Sorbonnelaan 2, 3584 CA Utrecht, The Netherlands

The talk introduces microcalorimeters with a superconductor-to-normal phase transition thermometer, as developed for high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, and discusses the physics involved. Single pixel detectors of this type have shown excellent performance, in terms of energy resolution and thermal response speed, and the current understanding of these devices is presented.

Based on the progress with single pixel detectors, work on future cryogenic imaging spectrometers is initiated which have a possible application in future space instrumentation. The status and development of the large format arrays (with 32 x 32 pixels) required for imaging X-ray spectroscopy, intended for NASAs Constellation-X and ESAs X-ray Early Universe Spectroscopy satellites, is discussed as well.
