Screening in quasi-onedimensional Fermi systems — •Carmen Mocanu, Peter Schwab and Ulrich Eckern — Institut für Physik, Universität Augsburg, 86135 Augsburg

We consider a one-dimensional, interacting Fermi system, which is coupled to a three-dimensional environment through the Coulomb interaction. The work is motivated by the idea that in the metallic state of VO2, the electron-correlation effects in the one-dimensional d bands are screened by the three-dimensional π* electrons. The aim is to see how the presence of the three-dimensional system affects the one-dimensional system. We calculate the magnetic and charge susceptibility for different models (Hubbard model, Luttinger and “g-ology” model). Within the random phase approximation we find that the spin susceptibility is not changed due to the coupling to the environment, whereas the charge susceptibility shows screening.
