Optical and Spectroscopic Measurements at Short Time Plasmas — •Alfred Eichhorn — French-German Research Institute Saint-Louis, ISL, PO Box 1260, D-79574 Weil am Rhein

During the last years, two different kinds of plasmas have been studied in our group at ISL: a plasma jet generated by a small electrothermal accelerator and the plasma generated by exploding wires. The main part of this talk will deal with the possibilities and difficulties of temperature estimation from emission line spectra and from continuous spectra. Using line spectra, an appropriate choice of lines may allow the calculation of upper and lower limits of the temperature even in the case of absorption. Temperature and emission coefficient obtained from continuous spectra may be used to characterize the radiation properties of the plasma. If a wire of a material with low melting point explodes at atmospheric pressure, a high voltage peak is induced. This is not the case, if materials with high melting point are used. It can be shown that electron emission plays an important role for this effect. The expansion of the plasma cloud of an exploding wire has been measured by means of high speed imaging.
